PERMATRAN-W 3/34 WVTR Analysers

The PERMATRAN-W 3/34 high-tech analysers can test the Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR) on both films and packages from low to high barriers. They feature 2 independent cells with interchangeable horizontal test cartridges that allow a wide variety of sample sizes and types to be easily and accurately tested.

The PERMATRAN-W 3/34 analyzers are easy to use and offer the shortest test times available in the market. It uses the MOCON’s patented long-life modulated IR sensor which is the basis for the ASTM standard F1249.

MODELS:

This family of highly accurate instruments has 2 models each having a different factor of lower detection limits.

  • H Model (common barriers) – the most popular detection range from 0.05 to 100 g/(m2 x day)
  • G Model (high barriers) – is able to achieve a factor of 10 lower than the H Model providing a range from 0.005 to 100 g/(m2 x day)

 

The upper detection limit can be extended with the use of the reduced area film test cartridge (factor x9), or various size masking.

Standard Test Method for Water Vapor Transmission Rate Through Plastic Film and Sheeting Using a Modulated Infrared Sensor

Summary of Test Method

A dry chamber is separated from a wet chamber of known temperature and humidity by the barrier material to be tested. The dry chamber and the wet chamber make up a diffusion cell in which the test film is sealed. Water vapor diffusing through the film mixes with the gas in the dry chamber and is carried to a pressure-modulated infrared sensor. This sensor measures the fraction of infrared energy absorbed by the water vapor and produces an electrical signal, the amplitude of which is proportional to water vapor concentration. The amplitude of the electrical signal produced by the test film is then compared to the signal produced by the measurement of a calibration film of known water vapor transmission rate. This information is then used to calculate the rate at which moisture is transmitted through the material being tested.
