Carbon Dioxide Permeation Rate Measurement Systems for Films and Packages

 

The PERMATRAN-C® Model 4/41 is a carbon dioxide (CO2) transmission rate test system used to assess barrier films and package materials. It is ideally suited for predicting product shelf-life or checking the quality of incoming and outgoing packaging materials. These results aid in structure development and prevent costly over packaging.

This model performs tests directly at “real world” temperature and CO2 levels. The system’s transmission rate software can control up to 20 test cells in a system. The software will also reduce the possibility of errors with its ability to automatically determine stability and compensate for any flow changes. Pre-programmed test formats, computer, and menu-driven screens make it easy to generate and interpret data test data.

Like all MOCON permeation test systems, the PERMATRAN-C® Model 4/41 is interchangeable. A flexible, dual-film, test-cell configuration and optional package environmental chamber allow for the testing of flat films and finished packages.

 

OX-TRAN® Model 1/50

 

This oxygen transmission rate analyser has many features and is designed for simple out-of-the box user installation and is packed with new technology. This includes an absolute coulometric method, with added software to reduce user error and automatic relative humidity controls.

The OX-TRAN Model 1/50 provides MOCON accuracy and combines it with a new patent pending coulometric method for accurate readings, eliminating the need to calibrate. The OX-TRAN® Model 1/50 includes a standard Quick Start® function which speeds set-up time. Frequency Modulation RH Control™, provides faster and automatic relative humidity controls – a feature which is not generally found even on more expensive units which allow real-life testing conditions.

PERMATRAN-W® Model 1/50

 

MOCON’s PERMATRAN-W Model 1/50 is a low-cost water vapour transmission rate (WVTR) analyser which gives companies who were previously unable to justify the expenditure, the ability to perform in-house permeation with an affordable, robust quality control instrument. An ideal entry level WVTR analyser for food beverage, pharmaceutical, building material and electronic applications.

This WVTR analyser is between 30 and 70 percent less expensive than most other units available today.

The system is a single-cell, stand-alone instrument, designed to test medium-to-low barrier film within the range of 0.1-1000 gm/m2day and less the 65 mil thick.

Another compliment to the feature-rich technology is that the analyser is ‘fault tolerant’, making it easy-to-operate with minimal training. In addition, its rugged construction enables it to withstand the production floor environment without the chance of it being damaged.

 

Temperature and relative humidity (RH) are two important factors that have an impact on permeation. The PERMATRAN-W Model 1/50 has been designed to quickly and automatically generate relative humidity—a feature which is typically not even found on even more expensive units.

Unlike most other permeation instruments, the PERMATRAN-W Model 1/50 has built in software. The unit has a small footprint and does not require an additional computer. The operator uses a keypad to input the test parameters (which are displayed on an easy-to-read). Parameters can be saved in a Quick Start menu allowing for a fast startup when the material is tested again at a later stage.

OX-TRAN® Model 2/22 Series

 

The MOCON OXTRAN 2/22 oxygen permeation instrument is designed specifically to advance throughput, increase the labs’ efficiency, and facilitate operations. Operators will spend less time setting up and controlling permeation tests, which enables them to focus on and achieve more in less time.

A new user interface and increased automation of MOCON Oxtran Model 2/22  has simplified testing more than ever before, with less skill required, minimising the costs associated with training new staff members or transitioning responsibilities within the company. Starting a new test could be as simple as a single press of a button.

Mocon has achieved exceptional breakthroughs in permeation technology that can shorten test times by up to 50%. New technology has assisted in the reduction of instrument leak rates and has increased sensor performance, which means that lengthy zero measurements can be avoided and exam cycles can be shortened. OpTech® O₂ – Model P

 

The new OpTech-O2 Model P test system from Mocon operates with a patent-pending Pressure Needle with a sensor to measure the internal pressure of a package and calculates the precise oxygen reading. The internal pressure of the package has a direct impact on the accuracy of the oxygen reading.

The instrument’s ability to automatically compensate for the internal pressure when measuring headspace gas is especially important for small packages, such as blister packs. This is because of the range of actions, such as the force required to insert the needle, can impact the internal pressure of the package. The capability also benefits any package size with unknown internal conditions.

An added benefit of this model is that the sensor of the Pressure Needle is located at the tip and is inserted directly into the headspace, which

eliminates the need to extract headspace to conduct a test. The non-consuming sensors allow long-term shelf-life studies by measuring the changes within the headspace of the same package.

MOCON’s OpTech-O2 technology relies on an optical sensor that “fluoresces” or gives off light directly related to the amount of oxygen that has been measured in the package headspace. In addition to headspace measurement, the OpTech-O2 Model P is a useful tool for measuring oxygen permeation rates down to 1cc/(m2?day).
